Need to look good for an after-work date? These smart grooming tips will help you look sharp fast—no trip home required.
So, you have a romantic date or job interview directly after work with no time to go home for a shower and shave. That means sprucing up on the go.
If your job leaves you covered in grime and there’s nowhere to cleanup, this will be impossible. But for the rest of us—whether you’re a waiter, a barber, or a clerk—it’s perfectly doable.
You won’t even need access to running water to look and smell your best.
But good planning is imperative.
If you get a call on Wednesday evening inviting you to an interview on Thursday after work, you’ll want to be able to say yes.
You don’t want to worry about your hair being too long and unkempt, or not having the right thing to wear.
Dressing for the Occasion
Preparing for an After-Work Job Interview
If you’re job hunting and don’t want to raise suspicion at your current workplace, you may need to change your image before interview invites begin to arrive. Swap your usual business casual of chinos and polo shirts for slacks and dress shirts. After a week or so, nobody will think anything of it.
That way, you’ll only have to add a tie and suit jacket after leaving the office on interview day.
Looking Good for an After-Work Social or Romantic Date
Unlike a job interview, there’s usually nothing secretive about a social or romantic date—depending on who the romance is with.
For convenience, choose a venue where an open neck shirt, chinos, and sport jacket are appropriate. Whether it’s a wine bar or a night at the theater, the key is that you don’t need a suit or tuxedo.
Regular Grooming: Never Be Taken By Surprise
Beyond reasons of hygiene, we keep our houses neat and tidy in order that we can welcome guests at any moment without shame or embarrassment.
Treat your personal appearance in the same way; opportunity often knocks when we least expect it.
Below are grooming essentials that require regular attention. If you neglect them, you won’t be able to transition into your most polished self at the drop of a hat.
Hair
Visit your barber once or twice a month to trim your beard or mustache and get a haircut.
I do this myself every Saturday, running clippers over my horseshoe hairline and trimming the lower contour of my mustache.
Whiskers that won’t lie flat are clipped daily.
If you blend out grays on either your face or head, make sure you never have visible roots. It’s also important that your hair doesn’t look dyed. The secret lies in using an ash-toned shade; anything too saturated appears artificial after a certain age. If you’re naturally red, a warm blond is probably your best option.
And lastly, keep your hair in good condition.
I don’t need to worry about the few remaining strands on my head, but I oil my mustache every night and apply beard balm in the morning.
Hands and Nails
Well-maintained hands indicate an eye for detail and an appreciation of self care. Treat them as your visitor card.
Keep your nails clipped and filed, and your cuticles pushed back.
And don’t just think about what people see. Most of us have calluses—that’s part of being a man—but your skin shouldn’t feel rough and dry during a handshake. Always apply hand cream.
Nose and Ear Hair
The older you get, the hairier your nostrils and ears will become. Invest in an ear and nose trimmer to keep pesky protrusions at bay—being the age I am, I use it almost daily.
Keep Your Facial Skin in Good Condition
In spite of being men, few of us get by on just soap and water.
Find a cleanser and moisturizer that work for your skin type: one for the morning and another that aids regeneration at night.
I favor showering and shaving in the morning rather than the eveining. It leaves me feeling and looking fresh for the day ahead and makes a second shave before a date unnecessary.
Short-Term Planning
As men, we produce a lot of sebum. At the same time, our beards grow, and our eyes may be less than bright if we stare at a screen all day—we can’t disguise this with makeup as women can.
But there are quick fixes that are suitable for men.
Start by going to bed early the night before your date in order that you look and feel less tired throughout the day.
And before going to bed, use a skin treatment appropriate for your skin type. It may be a mask or an exfoliant. For noticeable results, I like The Ordinary’s AHA & BHA Peeling Solution. Dissolving dead cells, it leaves my face fresh and glowing.
After exfoliating, men with fair or dull skin may want to apply self-tan. A bit of color can help you seem less fatigued after a hard day.
Tanning towels allow for smooth, natural-looking results. Be sure to cover every inch of visible skin from your neck to your dome, and don’t forget your ears. Take a shower in the morning to even out patchiness.

Look Good for an After-Work Date With These Quick Fixes
If you’re properly prepared, a strategically stocked dopp bag is key to a refreshed and polished appearance after a hard day at work.
Here’s a list of items that provide quick fixes that require no running water and no restroom. Adapt it according to your individual needs.
1. A Hand Mirror
Freshening up in public restrooms can be uncomfortable for some men. Apart from washing my hands, I consider any ablutions of my face or body a very private matter.
If you’re like me, you’ll need a hand mirror. That way, you can get ready practically anywhere, whether it’s in the car or a restroom stall.
2. A Battery-Operated Shaver
These devices are a godsend for shaving on the go.
I don’t usually recommend electric shavers since they pull the skin downward. This compromises elasticity over time, leading to sagging around the jaw and neck. But it doesn’t hurt once in a while.
3. A Travel Toothbrush, Toothpicks, and/or Xylitol Gum
If you can get to a sink, brush your teeth.
Otherwise, remove debris with a toothpick. For fresh breath, chew xylitol gum.
It goes without saying that your mouth should be empty at a job interview.
4. Micellar Water or Face and Body Wipes
Micellar Water and Lint-Free Cotton Pads
Another godsend: micellar water is composed of tiny cleansing molecules (micelles) suspended in purified water. It lifts away sweat, excess sebum, and shaving debris (loose whiskers after dry shaving) without disrupting the skin barrier.
Choose one according to your skin type.
To apply, simply swipe over your face and neck with a lint-free cotton pad.
Face and Body Wipes
If underarm odor is an issue, I recommend wipes—these can be used on the face and body.
They’re also good for the feet.
As a former waiter, I’m familiar with the overwhelming general fatigue aching feet can cause. In fact, it could leave you feeling and looking so tried that you end up canceling your after-work date and heading home.
Instead, refresh with a couple of wipes and you’ll feel reborn. A menthol foot gel can sustain the effect and lend a pleasant smell.
5. Deodorant
Even if underarm odor isn’t an issue, a quick squirt before a date can enhance confidence—especially during hot weather.
6. Face Cream
To create a good impression, be sure to apply day cream to your face and scalp (in case you’re bald).
Well-moisturized skin appears plump and smooth.
I apply sparingly to my face but generously to my dome—I like it to shine.
7. Eye Cream
Tired-looking eyes may be inevitable after a hard day at work, but they can compromise your overall bearing and spoil your date.
As previously mentioned, going to bed early the night before is a good preventative measure, as are eye patches used after your morning shower.
Otherwise, apply an eye cream or gel with caffeine. This can help to constrict blood vessels, which reduces swelling and dark circles. Personally, I’ve never noticed instant results, but it works for some.
8. Eye Drops
Red eyes from working with a computer all day may be interpreted as a hangover symptom—not a good look, regardless of the nature of your date.
Visine is probably the best-known product to disguise redness. However, red-eye drops are not recommended if you wear contact lenses.
9. Pycnogenol Serum or Tinted Sunscreen
If your face is pasty and you didn’t apply self-tan before bed, add color with Pycnogenol serum by The Ordinary or a tinted sun cream: I use CeraVe’s Hydrating Mineral Sunscreen, pigmented naturally with iron oxide.
These products appear invisible on the skin, adding only a hint of a healthy glow.
Because they’re so subtle, there’s no need to apply them to your neck. Apart from that, they’ll stain your collar—I speak from experience.
Men should steer clear of tinted moisturizers and alphabet creams (BB, CC, and DD). These settle in lines and wrinkles and are detectable under harsh and natural lighting. This is never acceptable on a man and may ruin your date and destroy your chances at an interview.
10. Perfecting Balm
Reduce the appearance of enlarged pores, broken capillaries, and other minor imperfections with the blur technology of perfecting balm.
I recommend M. Asam’s transparent Magic Finish Perfect Me.
After applying, wait five to ten minutes, then blot with a tissue.

11. Beard Balm
For bearded and mustachioed men, check that your whiskers are lying flat. If not, apply beard balm.
If you curl a handlebar with a stiff-setting wax, you’ve probably noticed that it balls up after a while, resembling dandruff. Having to wash and reshape it on the go is more than inconvenient.
To avoid this, apply a tinted wax. I’ve often used the Brother’s Love hazelnut product.
12. Beard Brush and Mustache Comb
A beard brush should fit nicely into your dopp bag, and a mustache comb in your trouser pocket.
You’ll need one or both of these for frequent daily grooming and after applying beard balm.
13. Hand Cream
For dry hands, use a product like Gloves in a Bottle Shielding Lotion.
It absorbs almost instantly and is non-greasy—ideal for handshakes.
14. Cologne
Fragrance is very personal, and not everyone likes the same thing.
This is why I suggest omitting it for job interviews.
If you must, apply only the tiniest squirt to your wrists and maybe the pulse points of your neck. In other words, it shouldn’t enter the room before you do.
15. A Clothes Brush
Invest in a foldable lint brush for on the go.
16. Shoe Shine Sponge
Like your hands, your shoes create an immediate impression—keeping them meticulously clean indicates attention to detail.
A shoe shine sponge will remove dust and minor debris in seconds while delivering a decent gloss.
